Your favorite piece of equipment

Postby hops_scout » Sun Dec 19, 2004 9:23 pm

So, like the title says, what is your favorite piece of equipment?

Also, what did you like the least?

Pictures, links, and information is all great.

I'll add mine as soon as I'm done with it :D

My camp chair. I've had my adventures, my purpose is to see that scouts have a chance to live theirs.

Camelbak Thermobak 3L
This is a military-style pack in olive drab. Camelbak is a fairly new company that has created the hydration system phenomenon in recent years. It is sleek and fits under a pack well for short to moderate distances. Holding about 3 liters of water, it should provide you with enough water for about 3 hours of activity. Coming with lightweight shoulder straps and 6 D-rings, modular fitting is provided. The straps also fit into their own pocket after being unclipped. I use mine mainly for day hiking and trail work while being connected to a military style butt pack via 2 small ‘biners. One complaint that I have had is that I have a leak in near the screw-lid. I think I have it fixed, but haven’t used it since I noticed it.

Here are several pictures of mine. Wagion would agree that Camelbaks are required packs for long summer adventures.

I had to get a new cap for mine. I emailed the company and they sent me one for free! :P

It's kind of a toss-up between my 1968 BMW 1600 and my Leatherman PST.

This year with our trip two Philmont I have two favorite pieces of gear.

1. A Hydration bladder (as was mentioned earlier).
2. Trekking poles (more valuable than the bladder!)

Not sure if you can consider it "gear", but my digital camera is my favorite piece of equipment. Got a huge memory card, can take a couple of hundred pictures (at least, haven't found the limit yet). I hope the boys will look back years from now and appreciate the memories.

Second on the list: rechargeable batteries, with a car-charging system. Use them for radios, flashlights, GPS, the aforementioned camera, etc...

I've got a digital camera but its not a very good one. I use a Canon Digital Rebel for action shots. It is also a great peice of equipment:)

my favorite piece of equipment is either my backpack, my hydration pack, or my water bottle with a built-in filter.

Mine is my walking stick. I lost it in a flood in September so I need to make a new one. The nice thing about a walking stick is that you can attach so much to it for use. For example place a needle and thread with a few band aids on the stick, then wrap them with a piece of nylon rope. carve out the top and you can insert a small compass. A few matches can be wrapped in plastic and then covered with some leather or another piece of rope. Your walking stick can become a first aid kit just by wrapping practicle things around it. There are plenty of things you can attach just use your imagination.

My walkie talkies. In long backpacking trips they are fun to pass the time talking to the guys on point or in the rear, in other crews or just to let out a warning that there is a "Trail Hottie" comming your way. :P

I'm rather attached to all my equipment. But overall it's probably got to be my road bike. It better be. I cost me more then my last 3 cars combined. (I buy really cheap cars, get 3-5 years out of them and then move on.) Nothing wrong with a rusty car that runs good. Saves money for spending on more intresting things.

Camp chairs are great too. In our troop we all use the Crazy Creak chair, and it doubles as a sleeping pad. Wonderful piece of gear.

If going to the Jamboree those are excellent for the Shows as you cannot use any type of chair.
