New 2010 Rank Requirements and other stuff

Postby smtroop168 » Tue Jun 09, 2009 6:47 pm

Saw this info on the "other" forum:

- troop webmaster and LNT trainer are now valid POR's for Star and Life advancement (not Eagle). Picture of Webmaster POR patch in book.

- new Tenderfoot requirement: Using the EDGE method, teach someone else the joining knot.

- new Star requirement: Using the EDGE method, teach XXX requirement XXX from list for 2nd or 1st class.

- requirements in effect on 1/1/2010

Other info from National also posted:

TRAINING UP DATE June, 2009

-Selected councils will pilot required training for direct contact leaders in 2010. Plans are in development to require training for all direct contact leaders in 2011. Councils should prepare to make training more readily available and to expand their training teams.

-New supplemental training courses now online include Interfaith Worship, Bullying, Leave No Trace and Disc Golf. These courses can be down loaded to be used as a course outline or they can be a self study. More new courses are in development.

-The centennial edition (12th) of the Boy Scout Handbook will be available in August, 2009. It will feature a mixture of parts of many of the early hand books with a 21st century flair. The handbook features chapters on Leadership and Leave No Trace, which both are firsts. There will be a supplemental 100 year timeline book with the first printing and a mini-book with the rank requirements that is pocket size. A website will provide in-depth information on many subjects.

-Training courses that require people to be re-certified include BSA Lifeguard (3 years)

Paddle Craft Safely (3 years) Swimming and Water Rescue (3 years) Climb on Safely (2 years) Trek Safely (2 years) Safe Swim Defense (2 years) Safety Afloat (2 years) Camp Visitation (2 years) Chain Saw Safety (2 years) and National Camp School (5 camping seasons)

-A new resource of information that you may not be aware of is now available on http://blog.scoutingmagazine.org.

-COR fast start training is in development and will soon be on the Online Learning Center.

-Florida National High Adventure Sea Base will be the site of a Volunteer Development Training Conference the week of Jan. 18-23, 2010. Courses to be offered will be Strictly for Scoutmasters, Strictly for Cubmasters, Advancement Policy and Procedures, Webelos to First Class, Geocache and Scouting, and Administration of Venturing. Additional information and registration is available on http://www.scouting.org

- The NYLT syllabus and supporting material is now restricted to being ordered only by councils. Troops were attempting to put on their own course, which is not the intent of this course.

Couple of other items posted "over there". This person is in a PTC class.

In fact, after I posted this morning, the Quartermaster handed out a single page sheet of all the requirement changes for all ranks. It basically covered what I said before with a few more. I left it in the classroom, but in general they are:

- for 2nd class, a requirment to earn and save some money (a throwback to some of the early requirements)

- for T-2-1, in addition to living the Oath and Law, give 4 specific examples of how you've done so for each rank.

- an LNT item or two for 2nd and 1st class.

Other than that, nothing else that I'd call earth-shaking

One more: Climbing MB will be required for advancement to Tenderfoot. Evidently National got word that someone wanted to make this badge age dependent so they are.

What will happen with SCUBA MB when a kid cannot take it due to a medical Problem IE: Asthma or Siezuers.

They will say it is safety, well climbing has safety issues due to Attention span,Cooridnation, etc. It is not the climbing or the rappelling Although I have never seen a kid cry at mammal studies or first aid class,it is the belaying correctly.

Oh Yeah Can you imagine a bunckh of 10.5-11 yera olds sitting in a room trying to do the climbing knots. It is pathetic that is why I no longer teach them at LC that is sent out as a troop to do before arrival Guess what. Leaders ****! Because they do not teach them!

I have usually had more trouble from untrained leaders/parents than I have ever had from the scouts.

Ok here is one from today. Had a troop with lots of brand new kids At the climbing wall 4 could not get 2' off the ground. The parents standing there were like they should get the MB they tried. THen I went into my Oh Yeah Attitude and said Boy Scouts is not cub scouts and Doing your best is not good enough if it does not meet the MB requirements. After a couple other Comments from the Parents I just looked at them ans siad Not going to happen so get over it. The I said the requirement is to complete 3 climbs not attempt 3 climbs. One was the SM's Kid 10 years old. Just more fuel for me at the Task force Meeting.

You do realize that without new parents, you do not have new scouts, without new scouts you do not have scouting? :?: :)

Thank you for pointing out the obvious, Frank. But the new parents need to realize Boy Scouts isn't the same as Cub Scouts.

I realize that Jerry is venting. (BTDT) BUT if we do not take time to explain the difference to new parents, who will?

I guess that I am also fortunate that there is an excellent adult run troop down the road that we can send the ones that do not get it to.
