New Favorite EBOR Question

I have a new favorite Eagle BoR question.

"If we (the Board) were to have a New Scout (cross over or just plain new) from your Troop and a Webelos II from the feeder Pack come in and tell us about you, what would they say?" Data inside the ( ) is mine for clarity.

My favorite used to be: " What if we decide tonight that we feel you did not qualify/earn/complete the requirements for Eagle?"

One that could be asked:
"When was the last time you prayed?"

IMHO, I think that's bordering on being mean/cruel.

As the SM for two Scouts who will have their EBORs next month I would be furious if Scouts that I and our Troop CC have approved for an EBOR received this question.

An extremely polite response should be:
"If you did in fact decide that I'm not qualified for Eagle Scout I would be very upset. Also, I'm sure that my Scoutmaster would like to talk with you. First he'll want to go home and get his BSA uniforms, Eagle medal, NESA Life Membership Card, WoodBadge beads, and FOS checks and bring them here and tell you where you can place them. Thank you."

I was on a EBOR that ask that question. (Not by me). It was a post 18 BOR so the decision would had been final. The scout responded very well. He replied that although he would be disappointed, the journey had is own rewards & it would not change what he had learned. (Paraphrased). Incidentally he was awarded the rank that he had earned.

His SM was in the room so he would not had gone home to find him.

What if they are not required to pray? IMHO "How have you honored your belief in a Higher Being today?"

My favorite is "How do you plan on paying back all the people who have helped you get to this point?"

Why do you feel that is a mean/cruel question? I think it's a great question! The answer will tell you a lot about the Scout!

OR: "What would be a great 13th. Scout Law?"

OR: "Who was the greatest influence on your reaching this point in your Scouting career?"

OR: "What has been the greatest Scouting event you have attended with the troop, council or the OA?" To list just a few!

Verrrrrry interesting answers. It really says a lot about them.

I have heard some pretty interesting answers to this one too. It certainly makes them think and explain where they are coming from.

My younger son reportedly said "kind" since he figured helpful, friendly and courteous covered most of that territory.

That is only for the kids that complete the practical part. If they fail to rappel or fail to climb they get 0

Rightly so. After all, how can you get a Climbing MB if you don't actually climb?

My favorite last question is:

What question are you glad we did not ask you tonight?

after the Scout responds I then ask them to answer the question they posed.

Additionally, I preface the question that they must respond (I do not let them get out by saying that we asked everything.)
