[Warning!] Facebook is no longer your friend, or mine....

Postby RWSmith » Thu Apr 29, 2010 12:06 am

WARNING! Facebook is no longer your friend, or mine. Period. And, no... I'm not being paranoid.

I've had enough, folks. Facebook makes money by selling access to your public and private information to third parties. You and I are not Facebook's clients... we're the goods. While Facebook gives you a plethora of options to restrict what other Facebook users can see, you cannot restrict your personal information from a Facebook or external application once you've given it permission to see your Facebook account. Unless you know what exactly what you're doing and set a bunch of your privacy settings correctly --which seem to be changing (for the worse) every couple of months now-- all of the Facebook and external applications that all your Facebook friends have approved (even though you have not) will also have access to your personal information... even if your Facebook friends cannot see your private info, those applications can see it, take it, and use it! This is not the same thing as your local grocery store tracking your grocery shopping habits through your VIP shopper card on your key-ring -- not even close.

On the face of it (pardon the pun), Facebook touts 'privacy this' and 'privacy that' to you. But, they disguise their true motives by counting on you being A) ignorant, then B) careless, and if that doesn't work, then C) they'll attempt to confound and confuse you by burying important privacy settings; frequently changing privacy polices; and now, they're just taking certain privacy controls away from you... not once, but twice already... all in the name of "forging the 'social' web, uh, to the next level." What? Come on, now. Really? You mean it's not about the money? How noble.

They stuck it to users a couple of months ago by forcing certain items that you used to be able to make private, no longer settable. And now, they're doing another end-run around users by sharing info with "trusted" partners. Partners? They're not partners... they're customers! Paying customers. And what are these customers paying (through the nose) for? You... You, you, you... and "your little dog, too!" (Think, "Toto"... You know, Dorothy Gale?)

I fully understand that, with the advent of technology, "social" technology in particular, some personal liberties are simply not going to be personal anymore -- I can deal with that... if, and only if, I'm the one in control of my information. Facebook has gone way, way over the line. Facebook is no longer our friend.

Don't just take my word for it... if you have a Facebook account, do yourself a favor and read (at least) some of these links:

Why is all this happening? Well, a college kid started this thing up some years back (you can look all that up yourself on Wikipedia). Back in the day, he was right(eous) about user privacy. But, those days are gone. Today, Facebook's estimated worth is about $1-1.5 Billion. But, he thinks it's should be more like $5 Billion. And, IMHO, the only way he can get there is by SELLING YOU OUT. The more of you Facebook can sell, the more valuable the company appears.

You can easily de-activate your Facebook account by going to your account settings. But, they own your data, personal and private; and they will keep it and they will keep selling it.

You can now DELETE (but, only because several major governments brow-beat them to comply) your Facebook account by going here:

I just deleted mine... they say it'll take up to two weeks. I wonder though, why should it take two weeks? I mean, it's just some ones and zeros.

WOW. I guess if you have something to hide then this isn't good. Since I have nothing to hide, no big deal.

I absolutely agree.

Users are allowing a free invasion of their privacy.

I filter my facebook fairly carefully. I only put things on it that would be mildly embarrassing if they were front page on my local paper.

I have a personal Facebook page only so that I can maintain a fan page for an event I help organize.

I doubt the profile picture of my cats will be of much use to anyone,

I think some are missing my point... I'm not trying to convert anyone here; I'm simply warning those who probably don't understand what's really going on, which I figure is easily 99%. Well, okay, 98%.

Here's a new link: http://www.eff.org/deeplinks/2010/04/facebooks-evil-interfaces

My (personal) intent in this thread is not to flame Facebook. I mean, yeah, I'm upset with their behavior; but, there's plenty of indisputable and repeated precedence, from successful lawsuits to government intervention and the like, against Facebook... so, you sure don't have to take one p/o'd former user's side. Up until around 2008, Mr. "Z" was all about protecting your PII -- a true champion, in fact. But, that's no longer the case. In fact, it's a complete 180 over the past two years, or so. How carefully you choose your friends, what you put on your Facebook page, or even what fan pages you maintain... that stuff no longer matters. Regardless of what you do or do not put on Facebook, they're selling your combined published (activities) and private (account profile) to literally bazillions of unknown, untrusted, third parties? And now, they sell your online 'social' identity, COMBINED with your Personally Identifiable Information (PII), while PREVENTING you from controlling what PII they sell (and to whom they sell it). And they call that "trusted"? -- I call it "illegal" -- and, in the coming months, we shall see.

All I'm doing here is giving you the opportunity to be informed -- as long as you understand what Facebook's truly up to, then that's certainly your prerogative. If you don't read and understand some of the links I've provided, then you'll just continue to not know and not understand... but, at the very least, acknowledge the fact Mr. "Z" wants and is counting on you to be that way... 1st, uninformed and thereby feeling safe about Facebook protecting your PII; 2nd, unable to understand by attempting to confound you at every turn, should you try to understand; and 3rd, left with no other option but to quit Facebook because, even if you do lock down all your privacy settings and opt out of every possible "thing" that you can, they're still gonna sell your PII, to whomever they want. And, in their TOS and PP, that's the bottom line. That being the case, shouldn't you be asking yourself, "Why?" -- Why all the smoke and mirrors? Why all the lawsuits? Why all the government intervention? Why have they been (since 2008) constantly making all these drastic changes to their TOS and PP? Why are they, more and more, taking your control over your own PII away from you? -- SO THEY CAN SELL IT.

But, what about Google? Google collects and stores EVERYTHING that comes though it's servers. I use GMail, Google Docs, Google Calendar, iGoogle, Google Voice, you name it. I even have an 'Android' cell phone. Google has my name, DOB, home address, telephone numbers, schedule (calendar), everything I choose to enter online. But, with Google, I choose who has access to my PII... name, DOB, address, telephone numbers, etc. (And, that's where Facebook is so WRONG!) Look, Google can track my online habits all they want. And they can analyze and sell it, too, for all I care... just as long as they don't attach my PII to what they do sell. (And, as long as I'm not in regular e-mail contact with the Dalai Lama, I feel pretty confident in not having to worry about certain, unnamed foreign govts. attempting to hack my account.)

Facebook is no longer in the 'social' media business... they're in the human information brokerage business, at the personally-identifiable level.

Sorry but to me this is like shouting at the rain. Anywhere you register on the web can give you name out. All your credit card companies sell name lists.

It's not about having something to hide. It's about a right to privacy. When you go to Amex, the information they have on you is your name, address, and credit score. Their privacy agreement prohibits them from giving out information on what you spend your money on. With FB, many post information about their children (future purchasers), political ideology (whose list are you on now?), lifestyle choices, etc. I deal with over 200 spam emails a day already; I don't need more.

What many people are now doing is deleting their previous accounts and posting under a pseudonym, using an email created just for FB.

Just one more reason why NOBODY in my house will have a Facebook account. It's easy enough to pillage the web for personal data, there's no reason to make it easy for some ID-ten-T (write it out yourself) to nail me to the wall. How many stories to we have to hear about some knucklehead who put pics on their Facebook, or worse, had a friend do it to them, only to have them lose a job or a job opportunity because it was really stupid?

My son can Facebook all he wants once he's on his own and responsible for his own life. Until then.....
