Are Your Unit Adults Uniformed?

Postby ThunderingWind » Wed Jun 23, 2010 2:54 pm

....broken out from the Reconvened BoR thread....

In my past two Councils/two Troops, most adults were in at least an appropriate shirt. Many wore dockers to CoHs and meetings and other less expensive pants to the field. This seemed to carry over at the District level and other units (as viewed at round tables) Most boys also did not have the official BSA pants but had a shirt and did their best to have it on and with all the stuff in the right place.

In my current Troop, most adults wear the official BSA pants in addition to the shirt. Same goes for the District (again as viewed at RT). Seemed to vary a little at meetings as I visited units in my search for a unit to join.

My current Troop seems to hold the boys to the "full official uniform required" standard - but this is from the boys running the troop. I have not heard an adult ever ask a boy "where are your uniform pants?" Only the boys doing the weekly uniform inspection in each patrol. Even boys that obviously just walked off the sports field (in team uniform and still sweaty) are asked "Why aren't you in uniform?"

As loing as the boy has a reasonable answer like "I just left my soccer game and came straight here with no time to change" they are OK. Even, "they are still in wash" is OK. Just not, "I forgot."

Our SM & ASMs are expected to by in proper uniform: IE scout socks, pants, shirt. Committee members will wear the uniform if they have one, but is not required.

We have 5 ASM's, and all of us wear the complete uniform (although I find the new pants UNCOMFORTABLE and missing 2 needed belt loops in the back!) but we can't get the SM to buy the pants, nor the CC. Both wear green Dockers! The rest of the committee wears the troop T-shirt or troop polo, and green shorts (generic). The boys all wear the complete uiform.

Ditto, which is why no one complains in our troop if you wear green Cartharts instead of BSA pants.

Most of our leaders at least wear the official short with correct patches. A coupel only wear them when it is a "public" event. Most of us also have official pants to wear although I have to say that few of us wear the new ones. Mine are both old style which were much more comfortable. I do not even own official socks and never will. I always wear boots, so no one can see my socks anyway.

Official Policy

The Boy Scouts of America has always been a uniformed body. Its uniforms help to create a sense of belonging. They symbolize character development, citizenship training, and personal fitness. Wearing a uniform gives youth and adult members a sense of identification and commitment.

Personal equality. The uniform represents a democratic idea of equality; bringing people of different racial, economic, religious, national, ethnic, political, and geographical backgrounds together in the Scouting tradition.

Identification. The uniform identifies youth and adult members of the Boy Scouts of America, visible as a force for good in the community. When properly and smartly worn, the uniform can build good unit spirit. When worn on the correct occasions, it can attract new members.

Achievement. The uniform shows the wearer's activity, responsibility, and achievement. What each youth or adult member has accomplished with program opportunities can be recognized by the insignia worn on the uniform.

Personal commitment. The uniform is a constant reminder to all Tiger Cubs, Cub Scouts, Boy Scouts, Varsity Scouts, Venturers, and adults of their commitment to the ideals and purpose of the Boy Scouts of America. The uniform encourages them to take Scouting seriously because of the investment in uniforms by parents of youths and by adults. The uniform is a way of making visible members' commitment to a belief in God, loyalty to country, and helping others at all times.

The leaders of Scouting—both volunteer and professional—promote the wearing of the correct complete uniform on all suitable occasions.

That was at National Camp School and as soon as I returned to the camp (we were off site by 40 miles) I was back in uniform.

Are those oxblood shoes????

Don't take this wrong. I wear my uniform to all Scouting events and unit meetings.

The BSA doesn't require any of it's members to own a uniform to be a member. But if you are going to wear the uniform, it should be worn properly.

Do we need a statute of limitations on posting to old threads? June 24 to Nov 12?

The problem is that the new BSA uniforms have immodest shirts for the women, and immodest pants for men. I can only surmise that, like so much of the BSA stuff now, they were made in China for the typical Chinese build.
