Need BALOO training rules clarification

Postby philpisch » Fri Sep 03, 2010 2:23 pm

Can a pack committee chair who is fully trained as a "pack trainer" run a BALOO training for several leaders in his pack?

Here's the situation. Our fall OA conclave overlaps with our pack overnight. In the past, I've been marked as the attending person that fulfills BALOO training. The past events though has been run by our Cubmaster (Eagle Scout) and den leaders (half are Eagle scouts too). All are fully trained ... except BALOO.

Since I need to be at the OA conclave, I'd like to run a BALOO training session for two leaders who stepped up, both Eagle Scouts and they also run the district round table cub scout program / breakouts.

I myself over the last ten years have taken all the Cub Scout and Boy Scout courses (some multiple times) including OWLS, BALOO, Pack Trainer, Trainer's EDGE, Wood Badge, Wilderness First aid and, to be honest, way more courses than my wife approved in advance.

So, can I run their BALOO training so that we can submit the tour permit?

Thanks in advance!

Ask your District Training Committee Chair.

If you have all this training, you should be on the DTC anyway.

Too many hats already. And I have those jobs mainly because I have four sons and I like the fellowship with other adults. Can't beat camping, hiking and the many many games of cribbage and hearts that go way into the night. I'm always amazed at how many friends I have made through scouts. Best thing in my life (after my wife and kids).

I agree, ask your District Training Chair. They are the one who can approve your becoming a course director for BALOO, and approve your running an in-house BALOO course.

I take it your council/district is not going to be holding a BALOO training before your Pack campout?

Thanks. Things worked out great and quickly!!!!!

I did as suggested (almost). Friday afternoon (late), I contacted the council training director (paid) who routed me to the council training chair (volunteer) who routed me to the district training chair (volunteer). All of them supported it. The district training chair agreed and emailed me the electronic training documents she had.

I contacted the two leaders (a cubmaster & a den leader, both eagle scouts, both run round table cub segment, both great guys and by-the-book type of people). We met Sunday 8pm in my basement and went through every page of the training materials and appendixes. Took hours, but it was well worth it. Some parts went faster since I've seen them display the skills and we only had to cover precautions. Other sections took a really long time such as walking through health and safety points, paperwork, permission forms, AND what is allowed/appropriate as songs and skits.) As we walked through the requirements, many of the skits / songs were eliminated. Oh well, there are good other choices that can be used.

Anyway, we covered the training and it was very good and meaningful. I love it when scouting can work out like that.

No. I'm running a BALOO course in the spring. I thought I'd stay positive in the earlier message.

I'm still trying to better understand the role of the pack trainer and what they can train. I get positive reactions when I ask what the pack trainer can train. BUT there is hesitation to acknowledge specifics of what the pack trainer can train.

Yes, if you hang around long enough you will get tagged to do some sort of training. Glad everything worked out for you.
