New Android App 'Door2Door' for tracking popcorn sales, etc.

Postby RWSmith » Sat Oct 30, 2010 1:14 pm

We've been asked --quite politely and professionally, I might add-- by a software developer (and fellow Scouter) to let y'all know about his new Andriod app, 'Door2Door'. (An iPhone version is currently in development.) Since our policies currently prohibit advertising, he can't advertise it himself. But....

....there's nothing wrong other users recommending (or reviewing, or complaining about) it... no different than one of us discussing a tent from REI, Alps, ScoutDirect, etc. (In fact, this "Geek stuff" forum was created anticipating this type of stuff.) You are certainly welcome to use this thread to discuss (i.e., post ideas, make suggestions about) the app; but, do not use this forum as a support channel -- use his regular support channel(s) for that.

Door2Door

Track sales with a tap

Perfect for Boy Scout, Girl Scout, and school fundraising sales. Tap to mark the location of a sale. Then, get a list or map of your sales to make delivering a breeze. Simply tap to mark delivered. Parents--track sales for each of your kids from a single phone by using the profiles feature.

Saves time and reduces mistakes when making a sale. Lost sale sheets no longer mean disaster. Never again wonder, “did I sell to that house?” or, “have we been down that street already?”

Features include:

  • Tap to mark a sale & the app saves your latitude & longitude, and converts it to an address.
  • Get a list of sales.
  • Get a map plotting your sale locations
  • Tap a sale item to mark it delivered, or mark it paid yet undelivered
  • Create multiple profiles to track the sales of multiple sellers

Support is available through our Facebook page.
Or, follow Door2Door on twitter.

Notes and caveats:

Geolocation — the app will not correctly note the address of a sale (and perhaps even the latitude/longitude) until it detects your location for the first time. It will use a saved/cached location if the GPS has not fired an update. The address & lat/long fields on the main screen flash red when your location is detected and updated. Wait for that before marking the location of the sale.

Battery life — the app keeps the GPS on to track your location. Sorry, that's going to use up some battery life. It has not been extensively tested in conjunction with apps like JuiceDefender that turn off the GPS. You might need to close & re-open Door2Door, I don't know.

User tracking and data storage — your sales data is stored on your phone. It is not uploaded to the web. Your location is not tracked, at least not by me. The app was developed using the Appcelerator Titanium framework. That framework includes some automatic usage tracking — when you open up the app, how often, etc. — but that data does not include your location, profile name, or to my knowledge any personally identifying information. If Titanium does track such information, it's nothing I have access to and I apologize for not knowing about it.

App size — Sorry, a downside to using Titanium is that the final app size is enormous due to their framework components. They've promised optimizations in a future version. Also, at this stage I don't think there's a way to set the app to install to your SD card. I'll add that option if I figure out how to do it.

Release notes:

  • 2010 October 14 - User interface updates in preparation for the iPhone release, also some bug fixes and improved error handling. I also figured out how to renumber the releases so that this one is identified as 1.02.
  • 2010 October 5 - Fix for address parsing error. I mistakenly updated the version number from 1.0 to 2.0. I meant for it to be a minor, like 1.0.1 release. The Android Market won't let me go down, so, here we are at version 2.0.
  • 2010 October 4 - Initial release

Planned features:

An iPhone version will be coming soon. No release date available, if for no other reason that I'll be at the mercy of Apple to approve the app on their schedule. But I'm working on it!

No promises, but here are the features I might add in upcoming releases:

  • "No one home" — tap to mark so you can return later
  • A way to record those "please leave the items [in the garage/on the porch/with a neighbor/etc] if I'm not home" situations
  • Add translations (Spanish, French, others?)
  • Printing — probably through some sort of upload to a web site from which you can get a printable list of sales & locations
  • Maybe someday a product-selection picker so you can specify what items someone is buying. This is a biggie. It would let you get rid of order sheets altogether. But, it would require a bunch of back-end features: a way to enter or select products before you go out selling, a way to save and upload data to create printable sheets to give to your fundraising coordinator, etc. We'll see. This is definitely in the "maybe" category.
  • Got an idea? Post it on the Facebook page or tweet to @door2doorapp

Interesting. But I cannot afford the $1000 phone or the $500 a month cell phone bill that comes with it.

Nope....$1000. My "credit" score/report lists that I have been unemployed for 4 years so the rates are higher. They do not count the fact that I am a stay-at-home dad, homeschooling our son while my wife serves the country at the Pentagon.
