POR oversight and advancement

Postby Caidainfire » Sat Feb 05, 2011 5:47 pm

Need some advice.

A scout passed his BOR for star. It was realized at the time that he didnt have a POR because he served as ass't patrol leader. His SM didnt realize that it was not an accepted POR and had signed it off. (took over troop a few years ago and didnt read it right). The scout has LD's and some cognitive reading/processing difficulties and also didnt catch it.

The BOR asked the SM about it and the SM said that it was their own fault and took responsibility for it. The BOR accepted that and signed off on his advancement.

Will this affect this scout in the future when he goes for eagle? He is now a Patrol leader, but he is currently working on life. If he remains in this positon for 10 months before advancing, will that suffice?

From BSA Advancement Committee Policies and Procedures -
"No council, district, unit, or individual has the authority to add to or subtract from advancement requirements."

No, you can not require the Scout to serve in a POR for 10 months, instead of the required 6 months, in order to achieve the Life rank.

The Scout has already been awarded the rank of Star. The whole POR snafu for Star is now over, done with, and no longer relevant.

The actual Positions of Responsibility for Star and Life are not recorded in any BSA database.

On the Eagle application the only positions that are required to be listed are those served while a Life Scout (after the date of the Life BOR).

Thanks for the information.

Im sorry I wasnt clear. No one wants to make the scout serve a 10 month POR to cover a rank already awarded. Or to get his life rank. It will probably take him that long to get the rest of the eagle MB's he needs for life (he is just twelve), so in essence he will have served the amount of time for both ranks, just all during his star period.

It's more a matter of him knowing he has done everything required even though the mistake wasnt his, so he wont feel any misgivings about his eagle. And wanted to make sure this doesnt catch up to him later.

Thanks again

The Eagle Application, IIRC, only asks the Scout to confirm the POR during his time as a Life Scout.
