Completed Brotherhood

I sealed me membership in the OA with the Brotherhood ceremony last night hosted byt eh Old Dominion Chapter of Amangamek Wipit Lodge 470, National Capital Area Council.

Ceremony was a little light but no less effective.

The only youth member attendign were the ceremonial team. This is probably the most sad part of the evening.

My adult ordeal was the result of a question asked of me by members of the Order. I was asked if I was going to the Area Conclave. I explained that I was not since I was not a member. Things were discussed in private and then the Council Executive asked me if I were to receive an invitation to join the OA, would I be able to attend the upcoming Ordeal. I told him that I would certainly be there in given the opportunity.

Funny side to this is that when I shared this with my troop, they all thought I was already a member from my other Councils as I lived the ideals expected of OA members and that they thought I jsut did not opt to wear the flap on my pocket.

In addition, when we showed up for the weekend event, he volunteered to be an Elangomat (sp?) and spent the night outside (wind/rain) with the Ordeal candidates. He also worked Saturday morning with his group of candidates, eating the same food they did.

Not sure what you meant by the ceremony was a little light but no less effective. Having seen the ordeal ceremony and the brotherhood ceremony several times. I really like the Brotherhood ceremony better. I think it helps if you have seen another ordeal ceremony after completing yours. I didnt remember much from mine being caught up in the moment.

If you are at an OA weekend at Wagion everyone attends ceremonies. Actually there is a group that strolls the camp and moves folks along to the Circle. Absolutely NO youth are permitted anywhere but at ceremonies and an adult better have a really good reason. Had an adult tell me he had to sit and watch the fire i went and got water and put it out and said now you do not, please go to ceremonies. It was 80 degrees out

We encourage people to attend. However we tend to follow the progression. Ordeal members arent at the Brotherhood ceremony. Brotherhoods are not at the Vigil Ceremony. But we have had 5 ordeal weekends in the past and also do brotherhood at fellowships.

Of course Ordeal is done after the BH ceremony but we do a Vigil Honor Calling out that everyone sees and their ceremony is at 5am the next Morning after keeping their Vigil with Vigil Honor only of course.

I completed my Brotherhood last month. it only took a few months shy of 40 years.... My Ordeal was completed at the Fall Fellowship back in "71 in another land far, far away.

My new Ordeal members (3) are already planning their eligibility dates, whereas I was stuck in a lodge as a youth that was rather inactive on the District level despite several attempts to breath some life into it. Add to that years spent as a Scouter with troops that were out of the loop, and time passes by without opportunity. Our local chapter has precisely 1 (one) active member, who is also an older Scouter with our troop. As election teams cannot come from within the troop itself we have no choice but to affiliate with the next nearest chapter about 45 miles distant. There are other local area troops but they aren't active within the OA.

Congratulations! I sealed mine in 1989, standing alongside my father. The ceremony team had won the Brotherhood competition at NOAC the year before. That was back when facepaint was still allowed, and even though I had already worn the same black-and-white half-and-half facepaint as M on an ordeal team, the effect when M turned from having only the black side facing me to having the white side was simply amazing!
