Boy Scout Leader Training Information
Typical order of standard training:
1. Youth protection training – Offered online at
http://www.scouting.org/pubs/ypt/ypt.jsp (Renewed every 2 years)
2. Fast Start – Offered online at
http://www.scouting.org/boyscouts/faststart/ (Renewed every 3 years)
3. New Leader Essentials – Offered by the council. (Recommended renewal every 3 years)
4. Leader-specific training (Scoutmaster) – Offered by the council. (Recommended renewal every 3 years)
5. Intro to Outdoor Leader Skills – Offered by the council. (Recommended renewal every 3 years). At the completion of this course and the leader-specific training, the “Trained” patch is awarded and may be worn on the uniform under the position patch.
6. Woodbadge – Offered by the council and in conjunction with other councils. No renewal required.
Ongoing training:
1. Monthly roundtables – Put on by each District.
2. University of Scouting – Offered by the council.
Other training to be taken:
1. Safety Afloat. Renewed every 2 years.
2. Climb on Safely. Renewed every 2 years.
3. Safe Swim Defense. Renewed every 2 years.
4. Trek Safely. Renewed every 3 years.
5. Leave No Trace.
6. CPR. Offered by the American Red Cross and others.
Miscellaneous training. Take as needed.
1. Powderhorn. Offered by the council.
2. BSA Lifeguard. Renewed every 3 years.
3. Winter awareness training
4. Basic First Aid. Offered by the American Red Cross.
