We have a new Scoutmaster in our Troop and while he has been a Scoutmaster before, it was almost 10 years ago, so he wants to get back up to speed. I put together a quick summary of the training for his position. I would appreciate any feedback before I give it to him! Thanks in advance!

Boy Scout Leader Training Information

Typical order of standard training:

1. Youth protection training – Offered online at http://www.scouting.org/pubs/ypt/ypt.jsp (Renewed every 2 years)
2. Fast Start – Offered online at http://www.scouting.org/boyscouts/faststart/ (Renewed every 3 years)
3. New Leader Essentials – Offered by the council. (Recommended renewal every 3 years)
4. Leader-specific training (Scoutmaster) – Offered by the council. (Recommended renewal every 3 years)
5. Intro to Outdoor Leader Skills – Offered by the council. (Recommended renewal every 3 years). At the completion of this course and the leader-specific training, the “Trained” patch is awarded and may be worn on the uniform under the position patch.
6. Woodbadge – Offered by the council and in conjunction with other councils. No renewal required.

Ongoing training:
1. Monthly roundtables – Put on by each District.
2. University of Scouting – Offered by the council.

Other training to be taken:
1. Safety Afloat. Renewed every 2 years.
2. Climb on Safely. Renewed every 2 years.
3. Safe Swim Defense. Renewed every 2 years.
4. Trek Safely. Renewed every 3 years.
5. Leave No Trace.
6. CPR. Offered by the American Red Cross and others.

Miscellaneous training. Take as needed.
1. Powderhorn. Offered by the council.
2. BSA Lifeguard. Renewed every 3 years.
3. Winter awareness training
4. Basic First Aid. Offered by the American Red Cross.

Not Required but super important is a Basic First Aid Course.

Where would you get one of those? I don't see one in my council's training calendar and I have not heard of it before.

I am not sure if you have listed old courses or if your council has customized the name of the current courses. Just so that we are all speaking the same language here are the courses as identified by the BSA for a scoutmaster or assistant scoutmaster.

Orientation:
1) FAST START* video or online

Basic Training: (in order)
1) New Leader Essentials*
2) Scoutmaster/Assistant Scoutmaster Leader Specific Training*
3) Introduction to Outdoor Skills*

Advanced Training:
1) Wood Badge*

Supplemental Training: (In no particular order)
1) Roundtable*
2) Youth Protection
3) Philmont Training Center*
4) University of Scouting*
5) Safe Swim
6) Safety Afloat
7) Climb -on Safely
8 ) Leave No Trace*
9) Okpik*

And a variety of others

* the BSA does not require these course be taken over ever and neither can your council.

Commish,

Thanks for the info. I am updating the first post as the information comes in. On the FS, NLE and OLS, our instructor recommended that the courses be taken every 3 years, just as a reminder. I have made that change.

They are always teasing me about training. I love training. Am getting ready to take my second Outdoor skills. Seems each time I take a training the second time I learn more. Different people, different ideas.

will do Woodbadge in the fall. Would have loved to do it before now but simply haven't had the time.

safe swim defense is good for 2 years
safety afloat is good for 2 years
climb on safely is good for 2 years
BSA lifeguard is good for 3 years
being a BEAR pricless :lol:

Me: "I need to report a hijacking."
911 Operator "Did you say a hijacking?"
Me: (Starts to sob uncontrollably)"Yeeeees....I started this nice clean thread and it was invaded by bad puns and word plays. I just can't take it anymore. If I hear one more bear joke, I will be ill."

Me: (Stops crying)"Why yes, yes I was. How did you know?"
911 Operator: "This is not the first time we have received calls on them...for various infractions."
Me: "So can you help me?"
