I don't mind being first.
Many moons back, as a staff member at Camp Conestoga, I was the "Repelling Guy" this was in the days before we built the tower. We had two trees with two tent platforms nailed to them.
The year before I had taken our Troop to Kandersteg. I think that Kandersteg might be the one place that beats Philmont. We had over sixty scouts of different ages.
While we were there we met a BSA Troop that was from an Army base in Germany, these guys were just wonderful they took some of our older Scouts out hiking and repelling way up in the Alps, crossing glaciers and really putting the "High" in High Adventure.
This was my first encounter with BSA Scouts. Them being so nice and so very Scout-like had a lot to do with me wanting to come over to the USA. Which of course I did, and it was here that I met my Lady wife and as they say the rest is history.
Some time back there was a lot of talk about practicing random acts of kindness. We as Scouts have been doing this for almost 100 years. It is strange how someone or some group can do a good turn and it has far reaching consequences. We are all aware of the "Unknown Scout" and how his good turn played a big part in bringing Scouting to the USA.
