New Councilor.. Help!!!

Postby EagleBoy62204 » Fri Mar 04, 2005 1:41 pm

Im new to the whole merit badge councilor thing. I recently turned 18 back in June and being a scout for most of my life and having a pretty fun time with the badges and all motivated me to become a councilor.

I currently am signed up for G. Arts, Family Life and Collections. The adults in my troop... two of them actually are opposed to me doing family life. This is, because I have not raised a family and have not experienced alot of stuff that the badge implies, when in fact I have been through alot more than any "average" kid goes through.

I really want to stick with family life, but with the adults refusing the boys in the troop to let them take it with me, I am getting pretty angry and about to drop from it all together.

What should I do?

I think you should talk to the adult leaders, and try to convince them that you are qualified to counsel this badge. if it turns out that someone who has raised a family would be more qualified to do it, then they should.

At 18 your are an "adult" and if council has approved you to counsel Family Life the other leaders should not have a problem with this. Talk to the Scout Master as adult to adult. If he/she still has a problem with this talk to someone at council.

In most councils MB Counselors are approved on a District Level. I have heard ofTroop copunselors and I really do not know wether it is really allowed. I would think Not.

In my council, MB counselors are approved at the council level and not the district level. However, as part of the application process, a counselor can elect to either work with any scout in the council or scouts just in a specific troop.

If you have been approved to do the MB Family Life ,the other adults should not question your ability.

They should be thankful you are giving back to scouting.
