Help building are troop up

Postby ellery » Mon Aug 30, 2004 10:57 pm

Hello my name is Ellery im a long time member of scouts. and have been in a great troop for 6 years. But there is few small issues im hoping i can get some input on. are scout master shawn is one of the greatest scout master's i have ever ment He is a humble man. He Try's 120% to inprove the troop. but most of the boy's will not lift a finger to help we use the patrol methed and the senor patrol witch im a member of. dring patrol conner will walk out of the main meeting room and start talking about "the hot girl in the dress at school" and not the topic at hand. the patrol leader will not do anything. but talk with them. then there is an older man in the troop that had brain cancer. but still try's his hardest to teach. but most of the boy's just make fun of him. they can not stand in a line for two minutes for opening. but dont get me wrong this kids are great people they just dont know what todo. any idea's to help guide us in helping them to learn what they need todo?

We do a week long council operated JLTC the last week of summer camp.
Another option is a JLT Camporee. Operated like a District Camporee but only to Train Junior Leaders.

There is a Junior Leader Training kit for use on a troop level. I know our council office here in SLC has several copies that can be rented (free rental-you leave $10 and when you return the kit you get your money back).
As was mentioned in other messages, there are JLT courses put on at a council level there is even a JLT that is put on at a National level.

It sounds like the scouts need to be put in charge of the meetings instead of the adult leaders. The scouts should be planning and carrying out the weekly patrol meetings, not the adults, this would give the boys more intrest in what was going on and maybe have them be more attentive at meetings. If they come to scouts a few times and there is no activity planned, then dont have scouts and say we will try again next week.

After missing a couple of nights of activities, it may shake them loose.

It also sounds like they could use a good dose of proper manners and how to show proper respect for women and for leaders.

Ths could be a good activity for a troop meeting, invite the scouts parents and have the scouts mothers talk about what they expect from a young man, or better yet get some young women you know, the "hot girl" at school and let them tell the scouts what they expect from a young man. The scouts may find out that the "hot girl" from school would probably not give them the time of day.
