Postby Billiken » Thu Apr 14, 2005 3:34 pm

Does the boy participating have to be 14 by the opening date of the Jamboree?

Thanks.

First welcome to the Boards. Please take time to read all the information in the FAQ section. Rules etc.
I would assume that is correct just like the NJ is Eammon might be able to answer this as he is the NE ARea 4 World Jamboree Chairman.

Yes, World Jamboree is 14 by the opening day of the event, but National Jamboree is only 12 (by July 1st of the year of the event).

Much as I hate to be a kill joy.
As yet we don't know what the age groups will be.
In the past it was 14 for World Jamborees.
Even the form that the International Division was /is ? Mailing out states that they are unsure.
If I were a betting man I would bet that the BSA will stick with what they have done in the past. But the correct answer at this time is that no one seems to know.
Part of the problem is that the UK has changed the age groups in their Scouting program. They now have:
Beavers 6 - 8 year olds
Cubs 8 -10 year old
Scouts 10 - 14 year old
Explorers 14 - 18 year old
Network 18 - 25 year old.
From where we are at things in the UK regarding the 2007 Jamboree are not going well.
The International Division needed to know what the UK guys needed for their display at our NJ. We needed to know who they were sending and how many?
After trying they contacted me and asked if I could find out. It took three weeks of E-mailing, phoning and making myself a real pest to get anywhere.
I explained that if the names of these people coming from England were not in the hands of our National Office, these guys would not be allowed on the base.
After three weeks I found out that the Jamboree is not under the Scout Association. but a Jamboree Company has been set up and it seems that there is a communication problem.
When I did get a call through to the guy in charge he informed me that the people that he would normally send were busy working on Eurojam.
This sounded fine when he said it and I accepted it.
But later when I thought about it - People that he would normally send?
I gave all the information I had to our International Division and am happy to let them work their magic.

Actually, any sort of drop in the age requirement would be wonderful.

My son (who crossed over from WEBELOS two days ago) turns 14 in Jan 2008, which means he would miss the 14 yr. old age requirement by about 5 or 6 months.

THEN the next National Jamboree isn't until 2010.
Obviously, the next World Jamboree would be in 2011.
