I agree. If you know the material in the MB books and prepare thenthe MB themselves are pretty straight forward and should not take a lot of time to complete for the most part.

Every week Kevin has a reading sheet that he has to fill out. It requires 100 minutes each week. He ask his teacher if his merit badge books counted. She told him that as long as he was reading it counted. So now he reads each book page by page.

Merit Badge books are the background information that you really should know. The requirements are like a check for understanding.

Try to focus on learning what the badge has to offer, not so much how fast it can be earned. Citz. In The Nation is one of the less intensive ones.

All merit badges offer to you to learn a new skill or maybe strengthen an old skill. To earn that badge means you have satisifed the requirements to receive it but have you learned from it too. Make sure you learn something dont walk away empty handed(or in this case with just a badge and no knowledge) Read the book, look things up, and have fun with it. Dont rush through it.

The majority of all MB's are academic related. Most 5-6th graders take earth science classes which will help with badges like Enviromental Science,Nature etc. The Citizen badges come into play during history and Social Sciences.

Family Life, Personal Fitness and Personal Management require a three month committment. The others can be done as fast as you want to work!
My older son looked at the Cit in the Nation requirements and sat down and just filled in the worksheet as he had it all in school the month before. Only took him a few hours the way he sees it.

Citizenship in the Community is a really fast one, don't let the ten requirements fool you. if you have internent access (which you apparently do) it can be done in a couple of days.

Camping! If you've had any length of time in the program and your troop has covered what's needed for requirement # 9, the rest is a breeze. Most all of this can be written at home and you could go over it with your MBC.
Curious though, what was the hurry and were you successful?
