Open slots in Jamboree Troops

I have been hearing that many councils have openings in their Troops. I also have been hearing that many councils have large waiting list. These two need to get together. SO if you have openings please post them and if you have boys that are on a waiting list you can contact a council close by to take a slot. FOr the Boys on the waiting list there is still a staff option if 16 or older BUT and that is a big BUT remember if they are on staff they are expected to work and not run around with their friends from the troops.The youth that are staff are assigned to a Jamboree Troop for where they are working and that is Their Troop not their Home troops. In 01 a boy was assigned a position in the action center But as soon as their troops from home showed up they disappeared and it took three days to locate them.

who'd be interested. Unforunately for those that are attending, if
these spots are not filled they will be forced to cover the costs.

Details are: July 23rd - August 11th
Cost: $2600

Cost includes: daypack, bottle, medium bag, large bag for camping
gear, jacket, hat, neckerchief, and council patches for uniforms, an
unnumbered large patch for jacket, one numbered collector piece,
jamboree, airfare and tour. They are also offering 20% off extra
uniform purchases. Cost does not cover Metal Jamboree Slide or extra
patches for trading purposes.

Tour includes: flying from Boise into DC, attending the Jamboree, then
touring the East coast visiting historical sites including
Philadelphia, Gettysburg, Ground Zero, Yankee Stadium, Statue of
Liberty, Empire State Building, and the Nautilus submarine (as well as
others I can't remember from the top of my head). Fly home from
Boston.

Halo - That after the Jambo Trip sounds terrific.
Many Moons back when I first visited the USA, I came as an International Scout Counselor.
We didn't get paid for working at camp
But when camp was over the BSA laid on a tour of the East Coast.
The tour was great and made better by having a bus load of young Scouter's from all over the globe.
Still a bus load of Boy Scouts seeing the Big Apple for the first time would almost be worth the $2,600 !!
I'm sure this will be a trip that these Lads will tell their Grandkids about.

As someone who travels a lot for business, I can tell you that $2600 for airfare from BOI, Jamboree, food, equipment, and the tour covering a total of 19 days is extremely reasonable.

When I attended Nordjamb (1975 World Jamboree in Norway) we spent 9 days at the campsite in Lillehamer and another 12 days touring Norway, Sweden and Finland. IIRC, the cost was $950 and about two months after I got home we got a rebate/refund check for $75 from BSA. Apparently, expenses came in below estimate.

Wanted to go the 1979 World Jamboree in Iran, but it was cancelled when the Shah fell from power.

Eamonn...I keep telling myself that those three weeks will be worth the money. BTW - my son was selected as a PL. He's very excited. Now we just have to get to July and get through all this "pre"Jamboree mess.

We did HoHo in Sweden.
Strange you mention Iran.
Our Troop had been camping in the USA and were heading home to London. when all the DC 9 planes were grounded. We were stuck in New York. In the end after much pleading they found room for us on an Air Iran 747. Many of the people on the plane were upset that it wasn't serving any alcohol.

Ok, I'm going to be a little bit lazy but when is the next World Jamboree and where? Also when is the next US jamboree after the one in 2005? I know I can look it up but I'm certain that one of my scouter friends out there know the answer. thanks in advance.

the next world jambo is in 2007 in england. and I think the next NJ is in 2010, to celebrate the BSA's 100th anniversary.

I was in SubCamp 5 -- Skane.

Earlier this year I was wearing the Nordjamb/Skane neckerchief at the Cleveland Council Eagle Scout Recognition Dinner (I was a sponsor). A guy behind me in the check-in line asked where I got it.

It seems that he lived in Skane (in Sweden) as an AFS exchange student.

I know that there are a few openings in the Greater Yosemite Council Contingency. They are sending 6 troop and have about 5 openings. They plan on touring the East Coast and attend the Jamboree for about 21 days and the cost is about $2,500.

I beleive that Nassau Long Island has some spots if you are near there. The council is Theodore Roosevelt Council and the website is www.trcbsa.org
