I just found the instructions for making a backpack stove out of soda cans.
Is weighs almost nothing.

i use an alcohol stove, and it doesnt add that much weight. i like them. they are much cheaper than the whitegas stoves, and in my mind are easier to carry

I was at SM fundamentals or Boy Scout Outdoor training this weekend and saw one of the Pepsi stoves. Going to have to make one!

Yes, the soda can stoves are a neat idea and yes they work very well. Please be aware that the flame is not visible!! We had an ASM attempt to refill a stove that he thought had run out of fuel. Thankfully my son only lost his sideburns :) But I do feel compelled to share this story so as no one else experiences a real tragedy.

That happens to be a difficult question to answer. For my son, his franks & beans were ready very quickly so I would say a quart of water would be maybe 4 - 6 minutes (if pot is covered). Other boys did not experience the same result and were forced to use a more traditional method of cooking. For those stoves, best quess for time to boil a quart of water - two weeks : )\

I own a maufactored alcohol stove and I enjoy the simplicity of it. I also think its fun for the scouts to build them. Another Warning: Besides the flame being invisible, alcohol stoves are not real efficient for cold weather camping. Before you know it, you have run out of alcohol and better have a back-up. Stick to liquid gas for cold weather.
