How do you become a merit badge counselor? Do you have to be a
certain age?

Yes, you do have to be an adult to be a merit badge counselor.
In addition, you do have to be qualified. At minimum, you must
have good knowledge of the subject matter relating to the
merit badge you want to teach. There are other requirements as
well. Click on the following link for more information:

My bad, your correct, there is an age 18 requirement. I'm
afraid I was thinking about summer camp counselors. What I
forgot was that summer camp staff members under the age of 18
who help with merit badges are actually assisting an adult who
officially serves as the merit badge counselor. I will correct
the above.

Dang. I heard you had to be an Eagle Scout to be a counselor.
So much for getting my hopes up...

By the way, I had a fifteen-year-old counselor at my camp this
summer. He was teaching Geology. He was a Star Scout, but he
had 61 Merit Badges. Is this a mistake, or is there some sort
of exception?

It's like the tot'n chit card. A scout can teach the
information to another scout but only the leader can sign off
on it. So the kids at camp can teach information but only the
councilor can sign off. (at least that's my guess.)

At summer camp, the staff members who are under age 18 are
basically considered instructors and aid the scouts in meeting
all the requirements. The blue cards should in fact be signed
by the Actual counselor who is over age 18 and is a certified
merit badge counselor. Many Scout camps make all of the staff
go through Merit Badge Counselor training, along with Youth
Protection Training, First Aid Training, etc.

the youth-staff passes off all of the requirements but the Director signs it. I did that for two years. I feel sorry for the directors. in one summor I had about 700 kids go thorugh, and that was only in my two merit badges. the director also signs all other merit badge cards in the area.
