Ready and Prepared

Postby t305spl » Tue Jun 07, 2005 4:55 pm

Has anyone been on www.scouting.org recently. I dont know about you but I just found out about this award. Anyone think their troop will complete it? Heres some info about it.

The BSA Ready & Prepared Award was developed to encourage and reward Boy Scout troops, Varsity Scout teams, and Venturing crews that incorporate safe practices while enjoying challenging activities. The award acknowledges the common sense and judgment, founded on knowledge and training, used to incorporate risk management into a unit's decision-making process. It recognizes that the more responsibility individual members take for their personal health and safety, the more everyone contributes to a successful activity. Earning the award helps units focus on areas in which emphasizing risk management can help reduce fatalities and serious injury, such as

* Driver and passenger safety
* BSA Youth Protection
* Precautions for aquatics activities
* Premises safety and first-aid readiness
* Personal fitness and safety

The BSA Ready and Prepared Award looks like a great idea. Every Troop needs to use these requirements as guidelines to operating a prepared troop.

Good Ideas

Postby riverwalk » Sun Aug 07, 2005 8:15 pm

There are other recent "good ideas" for all our Programs too. The Safe Unit Award, and the Emergency Preparedness Award are two others I'm now promoting. I just took on my old H&S Chair hat again (third time, haha)...and now is a good time as interest is there, given some things people have heard about.

Just FYI, if your local COG (Council of Government), or CERT in a community ask you to volunteer for a Drill...it can help everyone. There is a local Exercise this week, by the Strategic National Stockpile (SNS) people, to test the Dallas procedures. All "Drills" give valuable input about your readiness. But this Drill will determine how many supplies the Dallas area gets for a real crisis. Yikes, that's important. While I'm on this trail....when your Unit has an interest in participating in such things (of course their may be restrictions)...consider local emergency services, Hospitals (have to test their Emergency Department on a regular basis), and the ARC (Red Cross). All of these folks and more, may be doing Drills. Find ways to make it count for Requirements also. Many times in our Programs, we see where a Scout or Venturer is to "teach a skill to others". There are many opportunities. "Be Prepared". :wink:

I just got the new Ready and Prepared Award full size pamplet from the service center. Publication no. 10-278. A great tool to introduce the program. I will use it for a handout at a program at Roundtable. It describes the award, the requirements, resources, and contains an application. I am also advising the unit commissioners to promote it at troop visits. It's good also to have the BSA Physical Fitness Award and Emergency Preparedness BSA information with you. Get this from the scouting.org site.
