A den chief provides assistance and instruction at the Cub Scout/Webelos level. They typically have to attend a training session to help them learn how to be a good den chief.

These den chiefs are often a vital link between the Webelos and the Troop.

Many times the Den Chiefs may be the only contact that the pack has with a troop. However, many activites should be planned to help introduce the upcoming Webelos to the troop as to ease the Transition. There is a lot of info available on the web about this...

A good den chief will make cub scouts WANT to join your troop and be a boy scout!

If the Pack wants to take advantage of the services of a den chief they or the troop may need to be flexible. Its worth it.
Den Chief is an often unused leadership position, but a valueable one.

Pack/Troop meetings same day and Den Chief

Postby mommatoodle » Sun Sep 05, 2004 9:23 am

My son is a den chief and has run into this problem. The pack night is the same as his troop meeting. He sat down with the Cubmaster and discussed the fact that there would be times when he could not be at pack night. For instance. he has a board of review on pack night this month. The Cubmaster understands why he can not be at the pack night. It really isn't a problem when all parties concerned sit down and talk about why the scout won't be there. By the way, I know you have to be first class to before you can be den chief. My son will become first class this month. He asked his Scoutmaster if he could become a den chief early, since the webelos group he would be den chief for met over the summer. He was almost done with first class and would only need a scoutmasters conference and board of review when school started. Both the Scoutmaster and the Cubmaster agreed that he could start a month early. My son has taken the position of den chief very seriously, has read the entire den chief handbook and is bugging everyone as to when the training is. (we don't have a date yet) I am very proud of my son, and all that he has done!
