well think about how much a t-shirt is then think about what snacks cost then what about extra activies you have to pay for. that should be about 35-40 dollors. yes that seems like alot butm then again 5 dollars a day for snacks and slush puppies( one of the main reasons to go to camp) which adds up to about 25 then add a t-shirt and thats the way I think.

Kevin took $30. He got a shirt and a badge for his walking stick and the rest went on drinks and junk food. I know that the camp makes money on the pizza and nachos. But sure would like it if they wouldn't serve them just before meals. We had good food. But I would see kids sitting outside the trading post 15minutes before lunch eating nachos.

We were at Sid Richardson in Longhorn Council.
Breakfast, French Toast and bacon, Biscits and sausage gravy, scrambled eggs and sausage, pancakes, breakfast buritos. Sweet roles the last morning.

Lunch. Chili pie, sloppy joes, hotdogs, pizza,

dinner Tacos, chicken and rice, spaghetti, chicken strips, and on Friday we had brisket, slaw, and potatoe salad. Cooked by one of the SM that owns a barbque place near Waco.
Every day there was plenty of salad fixing and always peanutbutter and jelly.

The only thing Ididn't eat was the hotdogs. Just don't like them. Only thing Kevin didn't eat was the sloppy joes, He doesn't like them.

But the food was good and there was almost always seconds of some of it.

Could your patrols cook their own food?

We do, even though the camp we attend has a dining hall.

Micah - we go to CTSR too!!!!

I didn't think the food was that bad, (except that tomatoe soup crud) but if you were told you couldn't cook in your site, you were misled.

You could if you provided your own food. I don't remember the details, but it has to do with insuring the food is keep at the right temperature and such. The kitchen staff couldn't give you perishable food to take to the site unless they had a way to refrigerate it at the site.

Your parents can bring supplies up for family night, or you can have a parent make deliveries, if it isn't too far to drive.

Also, if you have 3 leaders in camp, it isn't that far to the nearest town with a grocery store. They can go and come back within an hour.

And, if you pack mountain pie stuff, you could beg a loaf of bread from the kitchen. Save your apples and bake them at night.

Have fun at camp this year!!!!!!

Micah - I try to avoid posting that type of identifying information. I've only been registered on this board for a week or so and posting for a few days. How do you know how trustworthy I am? It is cool to know that there is someone nearby - and if we were ever at the same place at the same time and you heard my son calling me MOMMA, you could feel perfectly free to ask if I am the same one posting here.

Thanks to your information, I did call camp yesterday to see what was going on and I had to leave a message.

Joe didn't call back.

Did you meet Joe C? (big guy, Venturing uniform)

He and I have had words before. Nothing major. He majors in minors and lets big stuff go. The first time I met him, he yelled at me because I didn't bring 3 signed checks to camp. We had 2. We had been told we could run a tab at the camp store and pay it at check out. We used one check to check in, then had one to check out. We didn't owe any other money. The camp store was SUPPOSED to give the total to him to add to the bill, and they didn't. And it was my fault. If I had 3 checks, I could have left one at the store and still completed check-out. Now, bear in mind, we owed no money for checkout except the camp store bill, but he wouldn't complete our checkout unless we had a blank check, in hand, to pay anything we owed. But, wouldn't complete it if we owed money to the store.

Circular reasoning.

And, on topic. I haven't decided how much I am allowing BigBee to spend. I think $10 for junk food is enough. Sometimes you need to eat things you don't like for dinner. Now, an emergency fund is different.

As for shirts and other knick-knacks. That stuff can be taken care of at sign-in/out.

I have one question. Why are you having to pay at checkout for camp.
We paid our camp fees when we registered and there are no other expenses to the troop. The only other cost is if the boys buy something at the trading post. The very last thing I would want to be taking to camp is signed blank checks. And there would be no way that I would want my boys running a tab at the trading post. If they have the money in their pocket they can buy it otherwise sorry.

It is off of the topic a bit, but the idea was.

One check to pay any camp fees due at sign-in (last minute boys, balance owed)

One check to pay for the camp store/tab

One check to pay for damaged items and reserve next years spot.

What happened was my son had a $15 Scout Buck Certificate and decided to buy a shirt. He had $3 change and didn't want to buy anything else. The Pack had decided to give each boy $1 to spend and to buy program helps there, rather than make an extra trip to the Scout Shop. Since the pack was allowed a tab (I pictured boys spending money from their individual accounts) we decided to write a check. When he had change due, the Pack used his SB to pay the tab down, and only needed to pay the difference - then credited my son's account.

We were told the tab would be added to the 'bill' due at the end of camp. It would include any extra parent meals purchased, the tab, the reservation and the cost to replace any damaged items. (no, we didn't break anything)

But this fellow didn't want to include the tab because you haven't completed checkout if you owe money to the store.

Then why was there a line on the bill????

I was perturbed he was being difficult (he wouldn't even call the store to confirm the amount due) I don't think ANYONE should carry blank, signed checks and since I wasn't on the account, I needed to do just that. And, when I came in, with the signed bill from the store detailing the transaction, a Scouter offered to let me in front of him and this fellow told him I wasn't allowed to be checked out until everyone who followed procedures was taken care of.

edited to add

And, I was insisting on having the pack cover it, rather than pay out of pocket because I am guilty of looking at a receipt and saying 'it's only a few dollars, I'm not going to worry about it.' Poppa said I had to stop floating the unit along.

I'm glad to hear that.

I'm sure that means the next time I catch him it will be a better experience.

Who knows? Maybe it was just a bad day for him.

It is hard to tell - we can all be pure in our motives, but that doesn't mean someone else didn't try to take advantage of the system some other time.

We're going next week.

I called Joe - he said it has to do with the tracability of food.

The parents could come in with covered dishes. I get the feeling if the dish was hotdogs to cook it would have been fine.

And you were allowed to take a meal from the dining hall and prepare the same meal everyone else was eating in your site. But, he recommended only once during the week due to time constraints - after all, you only have so much 'free' time

Also, you have to use the 3-step dishwashing procedure and I don't know how you are suppose to 'air dry' dishes at camp. (especially since I get rained on :D)

He said that snack foods - mountain pies, smores, popcorn may bring animals into your site, but if you want to take that chance....
