you can't go to camp or be involved with scouts and not be crazy.

we just got back yesterday. it was a pretty good camp. i came out with 8 merit badges. 2 of which were eagle required. we also won the water polo tornament out of the troops, but we lost to the staff team. we also got the aquatics director fired (this wasnt all our fault, but we played a major part).

too bad they will have to shut down their water Front activities. BSA requires a BSA certified Aquatics Director to operate any camp aquatic activity. Most camps onloy have one certified person and to lose that person would put the area shut down. Even the Camp Director cannot operate it.

i think another one on staff is trained, if not, i think they can probably can find another one (hopefully). if they shut that down, it would really suck, that would be the 2nd area they shut down. they shut down the sci-tech(computers and such) and a few of the citizenship mb's too ( world, nation, community, ect.)

The nicest thing about getting home from camp was a REAL hot shower and getting to sleep in my own bed.
We had a ball. Had only one real problem and that was from an adult.
SHe came down to go to camp with her grandson. She checked in at 2 on Sunday afternoon and by 9 am Monday was telling everyone what a terrible camp it was and how her boys weren't having any fun. She had never met any on the boys in her grandsons troop before that day. Sorry. Don't know why her boys weren't having fun but my boys had a ball. Everyone is ready to go back including the one new scout that had never spent the night away from mom. All finished their badges. NOw I plan on touching on them but they are all signed off. No major sunburns, no injuries. Just loads of fun. Two boys met kids from other parts of the country and plan on writing.

Kevin wants to go back and staff. He can when he is 14.

i might work at our summer camp next year if i could get in without being a CIT. but it does present a problem with running the troop, seeing as i will be SPL by then. or maybe if i have eagle by then i will head down there and not have to worry about a single thing.

the only thing i dont like about working there is you get payed next to nothing. most staff here gets payed around $130 a week, only kitchen staff gets more (about $180 a week).

OK here I go again
130.00 a week. is pretty good for a 15 year old. Mc D's will only give most kids 25 -30 hours a week and at Minimum wage that is just around 130.00 a week. At camp you have no expenses during that week All food is furnished and you get to be out of doors in nature all the time.
In most camps the kitchen staff is on the Low end of the pay UNLESS they are hired through a food service. Then they are not really scout camp staff. Most camps pay a little more each year you work and if you were a CIT and work 4 weeks your week of camp is paid for and when Hired full time you start at a higher rate. ARea directors get more and the camp adminstration get more also. You got to start somewhere.
Well also, June is over on Friday and I still see that SPL thing on your signature. And May was over a month ago.
I am also curious as to what the Aquatics Director did that lost him his job? you may e mail that to me if you like.

A.) I realize that, but i could work at the National Wildlife refuge full time, at minimum wage, making a lot more than that.. i really would like to work on staff, but i just dont know if things will work out, if i have eagle by then, i will almost definitely be working there.

b.) he was suppossed to be done by now, but his dad has held him up. he would be mostly using his dads tools, so his dad wants to be there when he does, and he has been pretty busy.

c.) i will send you an email.

as bad as I hate to say this but if I could just roll back time a couple of years   I would have been smart enough to take a job at our summer camp when I was about 15 years old. I was offered a tent, food, one night off a week, a job on the waterfront, and 20 dollars a week. but I was already working at a YMCA camp. I was in a cabin not a tent, food and was making 35 dollars a week. wow i would have said goodbye to the YMCA camp and glady took a pay cut just to work at summer camp. now I make a little more than that but still have the dream about working at summer camp

Why the heck would anyone offer these at a summer camp??
We moan and groan about troops that are Eagle or Merit Badge mills and then allow Councils to make Summer camp into nothing but a giant mill.

Micah. What you are forgetting is that by working on camp staff it isn't all about the money. It is also about giving back to scouting. You commented about the SPL RUNNING THE TROOP. Sorry SPL does not run the troop the PLC does. SPL is part of the PLC. If your troop mates get the feeling that you want to run the troop they may not want you to.

If Kevin does go on staff I will EXPECT him to do CIT training. Would not want any younger scout staffing without CIT training. I did CIT when I was in scouts one year before I could staff at camp. It is part of the process. You can't life guard without the training You shouldn't staff without the training.

What was so bad about the waterfront staffer that they got fired?.

You also need to accept that SPL is an elected leadershp position. Maybe just maybe with some of your attituded your troop mates don't see you as a good leader.
Our last elections the boy that really wanted SPL didn't get it. It can be a bulley, and rather overbearing. The other boys simply let him know that until he acted more Scout Like. They would not give him that position.
Maybe you need to look at yourself and how you act.

lynda- if you want an explanation about the aquatics director, send wagionvigil an email, and i think he could give you the story. (its not that bad, i just dont feel like rewriting it again). what i meant by "running the troop" was that the SPL is a vital part of the troop. in our troop the SPL does most of the work getting things set up. our PLC is extremely weak, so our SPL and me usually end up running EVERYTHING. out of the group of scouts now, only one i know could run the troop if i worked at scout camp, the rest are all to "scared" to do things (set up events, call people). (they think people bite or something)

i know it isnt all about the money, but i need money for certain things, and i dont know if scout camp would cut it. i REALLY, REALLY would like to work there, i know it would be an AWESOME time, but i just dont know if things will work out. its still a whole year away, so i have that time to figure things out.

i am willing to take CIT, but i dont like the fact that i wouldnt get payed for 2 whole weeks.

i think i probably mis-stated what i meant. at troop meetings, and other events, im not so "overbearing", and "bully-like". i try and get along with all boys, and most i have a strong relationship with. if there is a problem between us, i fix it. i should say that "I have a really good chance of getting elected, but I still might not get the position." just like working at scout camp, i will have to see about getting elected as SPL.

well lynda, i guess you were right. the scouts didnt feel i was the right person for the job. the elected a lower ranking scout who they believed had more leadership skills, and deserved it more. i am just as happy that he is running the troop, as i would be me running the troop.

Micah - they brought Bob M back. He was there a few summers ago. He looks like a retired drill sargent. Used to act like it too, but he was pretty laid back this year.

Actually, I have to say, he was GREAT with my son. Maybe he seemed more uptight when I went with the cubs because you have to be more vigilant with littler ones.

And, we weren't running a merit badge mill, although I wish they didn't offer as many. My SPL only earned 3.
