4 Days But Whos Counting.
Pass this advice along Please!
Subject: hydration
In regards to hydration, I just have all Scouts carry two water bottles. The key is to drink a little all the time.
We recommend 10 oz. per hour during the day's activities. Tell the boys that their urine should be clear or pale yellow if they are getting enough fluids. If it is darker they need to drink more or more often. I would echo what was said about the boys getting off the bus. Often they have been gorging on sweets and junk food and not paying attention to hydration since they are on an air conditioned bus. When they get out in 90+ degree heat and humidity unloading and setting up their camp they start dropping like flies. This has been the case at our medical clinic the past three Jamborees that I have been on medical staff. Until they become acclimatized to the heat they will be prone to these problems. Most of our heat exhaustion cases come early in the Jamboree and many of them could be prevented by instructions on hydration. Water is still the best hydration, not sodas, although there will probably be soda machines around the Jamboree.
