I find it interesting that you can take Lifesaving without
taking Swimming. That does not compute for me. ALso after
looking at the Phillipine Scout Site Found they still require
Swimming and Lifesaving as Eagle Required not an optional
Required.

I agree that doesnt make sense. It's like trying to run a
buisness when you've never worked a day in your life. You dont
know how to do anything.

Perhaps our system here needs some updating! or at least a little reorganization!

I wonder why national put in place those requirements when it seems so logical the way you described it above.

well here goes a wild scene. the camp I just got back from states in the leader guide that to earn the lifesaving merit badge you must have the swimming merit badge. now here is the question I had a scout that we thought had earned the swimming merit badge but he told us he hasent. well he was taking the lifesaving merit badge and earned it. but he still hasent earned the swimming yet. but in the req. it does not state that the swimming merit badge was requird to take lifesaving but the camp says you must who rules?

The MB Requirements Have it hands down. Camps can set their own rules to control numbers. nOw the next question is Did the Boy get a Completed MB Card from the Camp?

A counselor can not change a requirement on a merit badge. The boy has earned the badge.

The Life Saving merit badge use to require the swimming merit badge, but that has changed. Now the scout only needs to complete the 2nd class swimming requirements.

noone rules, you just have to take the swimming merit badge because noone wants to be saved by a person who technically hasnt learned how to swim.

If you know how to swim, then you have to show it!

I couldn't agree with you more. I think the thought swimming not being required for lifesaving a bit of a joke. I wonder if BSA National even realizes that it is not required? Someone should write a letter or something.

The ability to swim is required for Lifesaving (see requirement 1b - swim 400 yards). The swimming MB however is not a requirement and should not be since the requirements for lifesaving MB are tougher and the scout may decide to earn hiking MB or biking MB instead.

Swimming MB is easier so it should come first. Just because you take swimming does not negate you from taking hiking or cycling. I have both swimming and cycling merit badges

I agree that you can get swimming, hiking, and cycling. However only one may be used towards Eagle.

More precisely, only one of them can be used as one of the 12 REQUIRED badges needed for Eagle. The other can, and should, still be used as one of the 9 elective badges needed for the rank.
