Postby yardhunter » Thu Jul 21, 2005 11:53 pm

...................all of the 120+ merit badges offered??

I remember a scout when I was at summer camp ( back in the 1970's ) that had about 70 badges on his MB sash. That's the most I've ever seen.

So,
I'm curious........ what's the highest # of merit badges you have seen a boy earned in your troops ???

Just curious..................see ya yardhunter

I saw a 13 yr old scout at summercamp that already had 40. Turns out he lives a few miles from the camp and attends several weeks each summer.

My older son earned three palms, so 36 badges. That would be the most in our troop.

My younger son needs one more for his gold palm.

My tent-mate the 1975 World Jamboree had 63.
Was "wild" seeing a full sash with some MBs on the back.

For what it's worth, I earned 39 back in the 70's & thought that was good & I see now someone earned ALL MB's. I'd show you a pic but I can't figure out how to post a pic here.

That's impressive anyway.
How old was this scout who earned all MB's?? .................see ya yardhunter

What's in a number?

Postby riverwalk » Sun Jul 24, 2005 1:23 am

Or, a friend in my Department is an Eagle with 42. That's the most I ever knew of until reading some posts here. Generally it's unlikely many people would ever earn near the number possible. It's impressive if they want to though. 8)

Who has earned the most Merit Badges?

Answer: Eagle Scout John Stanford from Limestone, NY earned the most merit badges ever. The total was 142 and he had a total of 8 silver palms by his 18th birthday.

Note: This was during a transition time when some were added and BSA did not limit the MB list to 120.

I read in the local paper a few weeks ago about 2 scouts who are earning a badge every 8.3 days. The highest number I have seen is 36.

Quanity for exposure is good. Quality is good also. One must watch gaining MB for the purpose of gaining MBs. I don't think it was intended for a scout to achieve 100 MBs.

...............earning 100 MB's may not be intended but I'll have to disagree with the rest of your statement. My scout is a 1st class scout with 7 MB's & he is almost 12 years old.

Why you ask??

He is the kind of boy that could care less about team sports ( you know those that take scouts away from scouting such as basketball, football, etc. ) but loves to work on MB's. We have 3 MB's going on all the time. When he finishes one, he's in the book looking for another one to start.

We just came home from a archaeological MB weekend in Chillicothe Ohio & he loved it, especially the dig part of it. He earned it & now wants to start another one.

So...........quantity, quality makes no difference to me just as long as he's interested in the program. I have no problem with a scout earning 70--80--or even 90+ MB's if he wants to work on them instead of playing team sports.

In fact, I always tell parents they should keep their scouts in the program because what they learn in the BSA will be useful for the rest of their life.

Example:

I'm in my 40's & I don't play soccer or basketball anymore but I still use scouting skills I learned back in the 70's still today.

Many schools are going away from team sports for Gym class. I have never been a team sports player. Do I play sports? It depends on what people think a sport is.
I Climb,Rappel,Kayak,Ski Swim. I earned many Merit Badges as a scout in the 60's and I still use those skills I learned then.
WE had a DE about 15 years ago that was an Eagle Scout and earned Every Merit Badge in the Book as a Scout. Oh, he only had one arm. Lost it at an early age by a DUI Driver.

I finised up with 64 and a ton a partials (25 actually) I intended to do them all, but other things took my intrest later. I'm glad I took every one that I did. Even if I don't remember every little detail, I have a basic knowlage of all of them. And I don't think there is anything wrong with knowing a little bit about a lot.
