Spoofs

Postby Elangomat » Thu Aug 04, 2005 3:22 pm

Not sure if this is allowed, if not, sorry.

I've allways wanted to create a "Spoof Class A" in which all of the patches are not made by national (therefore "fake"). I know I'd never be able to wear it to anything offical (and I doubt I should even wear it at all, but that's beside the point :) ). There's also another "problem" I don't have any money, and I would love to do it by the ol' fashioned patch-tradin' way. I have a limited number of patches, but still willing to trade them all for enough spoofs. Can anyone help? Any opinions on the idea in general?

I don't know anything about trading, but if you don't mind spending a little, the usscouts store sells a few spoof patches. Just a suggestion.

Once a spoof, always a....

spoof, haha. Yep, I'm planning my spoof shirt, mentioned somewhere earlier. I had two basic ideas in mind. I'm a collector of patches (and too many things!!), and thought to promote discussion on same. And I might use it in a session, or at cracker-barrel. Secondly, it could be used in a Uniforming class/session at Trainings. I think the problem of people wearing unofficial patches on Uniforms is small (IMHO). But, somehow even with all the official guidance and Trainings....look how many Uniforms have official patches in unofficial places. I hunt spare shirts, and oldies on ebay. Quite a few have some strange patch placements.

One experience I had, accidentally, when I first became a Scouter, was with the "knots". I didn't know any source for Knot explanations (now there are many). I found the one for Quartermaster, and asked the clerk about it. I was told it was for people that had been a Quartermaster as a Scout. Cool, been there, done that, so I added it to my Uniforms. Then, the DE asked me when I "earned" Quartermaster Award....hmmm, I learned that I didn't qualify for it, and removed them. At least I had the knot in the right direction, haha.

Here is a great site on the history and usage of our square knots:

Just FYI, I don't condone or approve of the wearing of spoof patches on uniform that worn at official functions and I've seen many people put spoofs on their official uniform. I can see the use of a spoof shirt at something like a Halloween party, though.

Knots

Yes, blackeagle's site is one of the most informative I think. In fact, his site very quickly displayed all the new "knots" and information, from the recent National Meeting. We also have a guy in my State, that has a reasonably priced book, showing all (updated) knots, devices, and criteria. I got his book at last year's Sea Badge, and now I "need" the latest one, haha. Gee, too many hobbies/collections!!
