summer camp for out of council troops

Postby hacimsaalk » Sun Aug 07, 2005 7:18 am

our troop takes a break from summer camp ever 3 years (2 summers summer camp, then trip), this is when we go on a "big trip". a idea was brought up about going to an out-of-council summer camp. it must have an excellent program, good staff, a good reputation, be reasonable priced and most of all, GOOD FOOD. we wouldnt mind driving 12-13 hours either.

any suggestions would be helpful

Camp Massawepie in the Adirondacks. Has a great 1st year program, and several options for older scouts, including off-site trips. Outpost activities for the entire troop, overnights and lots of nice MBC and facilities.

I'm not sure where in PA your located but this camp is in northern NY. Straight up route 81 about 5 hours north of the PA/NY line.

Or...keep National Policies in mind. When your Committee considers long trips, be sure they observe safety in Travel and Transportation. Hey, maybe y'all could be interested in some Camps down here in Big Tex, haha.

Try Blue Ridge Mountains Council. They have two base camps, one specialty camp, and several specialty programs. It's a little west of Roanoke, VA, in Hiwassee, Pulaski County, VA.

What's on your plate??

Well this guy wouldn't get into a cuisine discussion, as all have their own tastes, haha.

But, in my experience, as a Scout and now a Scouter....when at Summer Camp, or the work weekends in Camps....this eater was ready every time for the meal being served. I can hear the Mess Hall bells now, woo-hoo, on my honor.

What I mean is a Troops selection should be made based on quality of program, the interest of the Troop in the Camps Program (An aquatic oriented Camp with a 5 star cuisine may not be a good experience for a troop that likes mountaineering), cost and distance. If the scouts hated the program for whatever reason, or the adults though the merit badges were way too easy or hard and the camp disorganized, I am not sure someone would say, but the foods great and the troop would plan to return

PS I believe you meant edible

I would say "Go to Skymont!", but then I realized that you specified GOOD FOOD, and that rules out Skymont.
