MB counselor question

Postby ogunquitmaddy » Thu May 30, 2013 10:26 am

HI,
I completed forms to become a MBC I sent in the adult registration and the MBC form and also the youth protection training certificate. I waited about 3 weeks. Spoke to one of my sons scout masters and said I still didn't hear anything. He said most likely it would go through but I wouldn't hear anything. Well I called Jacksonville which is the head for north Florida. I spoke to someone there. She looked up my papers and said they have everything and that they usually don't contact people and I was good to go. The thing I don't get is that, I put down no troop affiliation being my son is in one troop but meets with another also and I wanted to be able to help any scout. So how do I go about getting an id number, if they say they don't contact us. I mean she told me I was good to go, but I don' t have a member number. Do MBC have member numbers? Also is it strictly up to the scoutmasters to provide blue cards, or do I have to get some? I know I can ask my sons scoutmaster these questions but I don't know if it works differently being I am not affiliated with a troop.
Thanks

A Merit Badge Counselor is a district membership, not a unit one. That holds even if the counselor has declared that he is only available to the Scouts from a single unit.

As with most BSA registrations, unless/until someone contacts you, and tells you there is a problem with your registration, you should consider yourself registered, in whatever position you filled out the application for, as soon as the paperwork is given to your council.

The BSA membership cards are usually only printed out once a year. That is usually right before recharter time. The only time you will need your ID number is for online training. You can contact your council Registrar in about a month, and ask for your ID number. You should, possibly, hopefully, be in the wonderful BSA database that is ScoutNet by then! Once you get your ID #, go back into the BSA training site and update your information with your ID.

The Scoutmaster provides Blue Cards to the Scouts in his/her Troop. The Merit Badge Counselor signs the cards signifying completion of requirements. The Scout keeps track of his cards.

You should check with your council to see when their next Merit Badge Counselor training is being held. Meanwhile, these links might help you -
