MeritBadge.org Is Moving -- Move Completed

Postby optimist » Fri Apr 04, 2008 10:32 am

MeritBadge.org is moving. For several days during the move, the site will not be accessible. Please do not attempt to access the site until I announce that it is open and available.

All of my work so far has been fruitless in moving the database. I cannot get a viable copy for the move. I'm hoping that shutting down the site and relieving the operational stress will allow me to get a good copy of the database for the move. However, I cannot be sure that it's the traffic that's causing the problem or something worse.

If it turns out to be impossible to move the database, I'd like to know if you want to start over. It's no longer my site, you are the editors, and if you want to continue I'll support that decision.

Hopefully everything will go great and there won't be any need to start over but "Be Prepared" is the Scout motto and I just wanted everyone to know that there are problems and things may not go well.

I think MB.org is invaluable. My Scouts use it almost every day, and I really can't imagine not having it.

If we have to rebuild it, so be it.

Now that all the site traffic is gone, I've finally succeeded in getting what looks to be a valid copy of the database off of the old server. Unfortunately, there's a glitch on the new server and I'm working with tech support to resolve the issue. Once we get that resolved, I'm hopeful that the database will load up with no issues and we'll be good to go :)

I can answer that one for you... We've been experiencig serious technical problems with our current web-hosting provider and have had no success in getting them to correct their problems on their end. Hence, our only option is to move.

Ok, news on the "glitch" on the new server. The service provider is having to update form PHP4 to PHP5 to meet MertiBadge.org's needs. I thought that PHP5 was already available (the server actually reports that PHP5 is running) but apparently this was not the case. However, the service provider was already aware that I needed it and they are preparing to upgrade it. Hopefully this will be resolved shortly.

UPDATE

MeritBadge.org has been up and running for three days BUT there is one really huge problem -- it's like slogging through molasses even though there is no traffic. If we open it up to traffic I'm afraid things will go downhill very fast.

Please be patient. Do not try to figure out where I have hidden the site. We need the site to remain traffic free so we have a true picture of the problem so it can be resolved. Please be assured we are working hard to get this done and get the web site back up.

I apologize for the delay.

Houston... We have a liftoff!!

Ok folks, this turns out to be a known bug (just not known to me). The web site is operating very well with a minor problem (discussed below). The new address is:

http://meritbadge.org/wiki/index.php?title=Main_Page

Some of the image files seem to have gotten lost in the transfer. I'm going to try to locate them and get them back up on the new server but I may miss some. Please report missing image files in the following thread:

Thank you for all of your hard work.

IT IS SO FAST!!!!!!

It will take me a few days to update the links on all of the worksheets.

Roundtable is tonight!

Postby tom0153 » Mon Apr 14, 2008 6:45 pm

Folks, particularly those who are most responsible for this forum, for meritbadgedotorg and related sites, CONGRATULATIONS on a job well done.

Roundtable is tonight. I had my fingers crossed that I would be able to pluck stuff re Wildlife Management (we are a month behind, it seems) to present, and I have it, and I thank you.

Combined with the "official" sites, USSCOUTS and this resource, I think I am complete.

Best to all, and again, my thanks. :D

Just an FYI... People have figured out MeritBadge.org is back up. We've had between 80,000 and 90,000 page views each of the last three days

Wow! That's great. I'm sure it will go even higher once the thousands of webmasters update their pages to the new URLs. :D
